Nightmares: Causes, Triggers, and What Can Help

Nightmares can feel surprisingly real. You may wake up frightened, sweating, with a racing heart, or feeling unsettled long after the dream has ended.

An occasional nightmare is common. But when nightmares happen frequently, disturb your sleep, or connect to difficult experiences from the past, they may deserve more attention.

What Are Nightmares?

Nightmares are distressing dreams that can cause strong emotions such as fear, sadness, or anxiety. They often wake a person from sleep and may be remembered clearly afterward. (APA)

Stress, major life changes, emotional distress, and traumatic experiences can all influence sleep and dreams.

Can Nightmares Be a Symptom of PTSD?

Yes. Recurring distressing dreams or nightmares related to trauma can be a symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). (APA)

Some trauma-related nightmares may replay parts of what happened, while others may involve similar feelings of fear, danger, or helplessness.

However, having nightmares does not mean you have PTSD. PTSD involves a wider group of symptoms and should only be assessed by a qualified professional.

What Can Help With Nightmares?

If you wake after a nightmare, try bringing your attention back to the present.

You may find it helpful to:

  • Take a few slow, comfortable breaths
  • Notice where you are and remind yourself that you are awake
  • Feel your feet on the floor or hold a familiar object
  • Keep your bedroom calm and comfortable
  • Follow a consistent sleep routine when possible

If nightmares continue, noticing patterns around stress, sleep, or emotional triggers may also be useful.

When Should You Seek Support?

Consider professional support if nightmares are frequent, affect your sleep, make you afraid to go to bed, or seem connected to trauma or distressing memories.

At Mind Always Matters, trauma-informed therapists can provide a supportive space to explore nightmares, difficult experiences, and the emotions that may come with them.

You do not have to understand everything before asking for support. Sometimes, starting with what is affecting your sleep is enough.
